The Prestige All Stars - Tenor Conclave (Mono)

Behind the Prestige All Stars on this recording are the four tenor saxophonists John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. This unusual meeting of four musicians from different "schools" was part of the Prestige label's Friday jam sessions. They are joined by the Red Garland Trio, with Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The saxophonists play blues and two older Mobley standards.

The amazing thing about this recording is that the stylistic differences between the four saxophonists do not play a major role, but rather their admirable ability to find a common denominator in an unusual session.
